Start From Where You Are (No Matter Where You Are)
I think I may have mentioned before what started me on what I like to call a Path of Fitness… If not, let me catch you up.
Back in 2014, my then-BF (now Hubs) and I went on a cruise to the Bahamas. We chose Carnival, not because they are the “party boat” or cruises, but rather the cheapest line to sail on. We picked an excursion that included canoeing. Now, I’m not sure what kind of crack we were smoking (technically, none – because drugs are bad) because we already knew that we are TERRIBLE when it comes to team, synchronized, water navigation and traveling. We’d been in canoes before and knew that:
boats + paddles = trouble.
Overall, the main trip wasn’t that bad. It was on a river and we were able to keep up with the group for the most part. But our guide was in a hurry, and ready to pick up another group. So, when our group got to the debarkation area, there was already a group there, dragging their canoes from the water. So, our guide lead us out into the ocean so we could debark at another area.
Which would have been fine if not for the aforementioned issues we have with canoes.
So, out into the ocean we paddled. One wave hit us, and we were fine. The second wave hit us and overboard we went. With our canoe capsized, we hung on for dear life and screamed like children for help, neither one of us having the strength to right the canoe. After what seemed like forever, the guide realized we weren’t with the group, had capsized, and brought his canoe out to us. Unfortunately. neither of us had the strength to pull ourselves up out of the water and into the boat. Thus, he was forced to drag our water logged asses thru the surf to safety.
Actually, it probably sounds a lot scarier than it really was, but it proved to us how out of shape we were.
So we came home determined to “get in shape.”
And I have to be honest, it was much easier for him than me. I could only do a couple of pushups from my knees. LOL
But I also knew there was no need to join a gym. They were expensive and inconvenient. I had joined several before, only to have to continue paying the fees long after I had quit going. There wasn’t one near me, and I knew if I intended to go after work, I’d never go at all.
So I researched online, looking for free and cheap fitness routines. Things I could do at home without much (or any) equipment. I found a lot of body-weight workouts. When I got bored with those, I modified some to work for me, and eventually I created my own.
That was 3+ years ago.
I started out doing something every other day. And after a time, decided to do make my minimum 5 days a week. This is what I still do.
I keep a small collection of workouts on my iPad so I can workout wherever I go. And it’s been great. I’ve increased my strength. I’m fitter, and more toned – even though there is still a layer of protective fat over it (working on it). But I’m always looking for new programs to keep it fresh and exciting.
Today, I found the Freedom Fitness Bundle. It’s a whopper of a program, containing many different types of workouts…. HIIT, cardio, body-weight – there’s even a section on flexibility, yoga, and Pilates.
And I’ll be honest, the likelihood that I’ll go thru all of the programs included is SLIM. But for $47 it’s cheaper than 2 workout DVDs (which won’t travel) or a premium workout program online.
I’m sharing this with you today, because this bundle is only available for a short time. But it’s well worth the investment because there are enough books, ecourses, and videos to last you a year or longer. When you purchase the full bundle, you can do a different type of fitness activity every day of the week.
