No Way to Cook On Keto

Q:

Help me find ways to do keto while living in a 24′ trailer for the next two months! I only have a 4- burner stovetop and a tiny fridge. No real way to cook.

A:

Okay, so I’m detecting a little bit of “panic” maybe. If you are sure that you cannot do it – then why don’t you start after you are out of the trailer? My guess is that you already know that you CAN do it. You just may not be sure HOW to do it.

So, I am incredibly interested by the statement “no real way to cook” as it relates to a 24′ foot trailer and a 4 burner stove top. I’m in a home, but I still only cook in my kitchen – not in my bathroom or in the garage. I, too, only have a 4 burner stove top, and most of the time I only use one burner.

What this says to me is that you may be used to using the oven, or perhaps the microwave more often than not. When we originally moved into our home, we had a working microwave. It putz out about 7 or 8 years ago, and we never replaced it. Most things you do in a microwave can be converted to the oven. Converting from the oven to the stove top or even a crocktop or instapot takes a bit more finagling. These are manageable by making more frequent trips to the store, and making sure to only refrigerate the things that MUST be. Buy smaller quantities to avoid spoilage.

  • Most meats can be pan fried: burgers, chicken breasts, even hot dogs, and lunch meat if you eat that sort of thing.
  • Canned chicken, tuna, or salmon are an option.
  • Eggs can be fried or scrambled or made into omelettes.  Here in the US we refrigerate eggs – not so everywhere else.
  • Salad fixings may be bought fresh the day of so as to not need storage. (I do this one a lot.) Those mini fridges can sometimes have warm/cool spots that can murder lettuce.
  • Some veggies can also sit out. Keep in mind that when they’re in the store, they are at room temp or slightly less.
  • Use canned veggies instead of frozen.
  • Low carb nuts typically need no refrigeration.
  • Butter will get soft but doesn’t need refrigeration.

I think the key to success is to be gentle with yourself. I mean you *could* wait until you get out of the trailer to start – or you can push forward and do the best that you can knowing that every day may not be optimal, but it will likely still be better than having done nothing.

Is it optimal – maybe not. Doable? Totally.

“Short Answer: I think the key to success is to be gentle with yourself. I mean you *could* wait  – or you can push forward and do the best that you can knowing that every day may not be optimal, but it will likely still be better than having done nothing. ”
